Study at Arizona State University At The Polytechnic Campus Arizona State University is the largest public research university in the United States. It has four campuses located across the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. ASU originally opened as the Tempe Normal School for the Arizona Territory in Tempe, Arizona, in 1885. After a few name and status changes, it became Arizona State University on December 5, 1958.
