The Arkansas State Board of Higher Education has approved a Master of Science of Degree Program in Aquaculture/Fisheries at UAPB. The Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries is now accepting applications for the Master of Science Degree Program. AQFI Facilities UAPB owns and maintains a 212 acre agricultural research farm that includes 91 earthen ponds ranging in size from 0. 1 to 0. 5 acres each. A 5 acre reservoir is used for water storage and supply, and a 5 acre farm pond is available for cage studies. Water is supplied by both a shallow irrigation well and a deep well. Also, electrical service is available to all ponds. Forty-eight plastic-lined, steel-rimmed, nine foot diameter outdoor pools are used for nutrition, fish health, and water quality studies. A roof-covered fish holding facility that consists of eight roof-covered vats (17' x 4' x 3') on a 1600 sq. ft. concrete slab is used for fish health, grading, and teaching purposes. UAPB also has an 871 acre farm north of Lonoke, Arkansas. This farm includes 200 acres of fish ponds (13 earthen ponds ranging in size from 10 to 29 acres), a grading shed and eight electric wells. This farm is being converted into a demonstration unit for aquaculture and fisheries research and extension education. Support facilities on the UAPB campus include a hatchery building (5, 400 sq. ft. ) with an 1, 800 sq. ft. aquarium and tank room and a 2, 000 sq. ft. holding tank facility. Other storage buildings for feed, chemical, net, tool and farm equipment are also located at the aquaculture research site. A 900 sq. ft. laboratory at the fisheries shop building has space for fisheries resource sampling equipment and fish taxonomy work. The Agricultural Research Complex on the Experiment Station houses offices, the fisheries library, and additional laboratory space. A 1, 000 sq. ft. wet laboratory, complete with aquaria and tanks, is adjacent to a 700 sq. ft. water quality and plankton analysis laboratory . Studies on fish nutrition are conducted in a separate 1, 000 sq. ft. laboratory, which contains a walk-in cooler, freezer, an ultracold freezer for sample storage, equipment for preparation of experimental diets, and instrumentation for analysis of feeds and tissues. The new extension building houses a 1153 sq. ft. fish health research and diagnostic laboratory with 100 aquaria for disease research.
