California State University, Chico, also known as the Chico State or Cal State, Chico, is the second-oldest campus in the California State University System. The university opened on September 3, 1889 with a class of 90 students. The university offers over 400 undergraduate and graduate academic programs to students. There are more than 60 undergraduate majors in the liberal arts and professional and technical areas. Students are also offered the option of choosing from a variety of minors, certificates, teaching credentials and graduate programs. In the last decade, Cal State, Chico has consistently ranked among the Best Public Master's Level University in the West. In addition, the athletic department boasts of basketball, soccer, golf, cross-country, and track and field teams for both men and women. The men's baseball and swimming and diving teams, and the women's rugby team have won national championships for the university.
