Siena Heights University, also known as SHU, was established in 1919, and was initially known as the St. Joseph's College. In 1998, the institute was rechristened the Siena Heights University. The university awards master's, bachelor's, associate's, and specialist's degrees in over 40 fields of study. The university is organized into the following academic divisions:

Siena Heights University 's athletics department fields a large number of men's and women's sports teams that compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The teams are nicknamed the Saints, and they participate in sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, and volleyball. Among the notable alumni of SHU are Ben Braun, champion PAC-10 basketball coach; Darrell Issa of California, U. S. Congressman; and Connie Binsfield, former Lt. Governor of Michigan.
