University of California - San Diego, also known as UC San Diego or UCSD, is a public research university founded in 1955. It is located in San Diego, California. The university campus sits on 1, 200 acres of land and has 694 buildings. UC San Diego grants admission to over 20, 000 students every year. There are a number of undergraduate colleges and graduate divisions of the university offering over 100 undergraduate majors, more than 50 masters degrees, over 50 doctoral programs, and a few professional degrees. Various programs in mathematics, engineering, liberal arts, science, and art studies are available to the students of this university.

UC San Diego boasts of some eminent faculty members including eight Nobel Laureates, three National Medal of Science laureates, eight MacArthur fellows, and one Fields medalist.

The sports teams are known as the Tritons and King Triton, a trident-wielding merman, is the official mascot. Students of the institute participate in various sports such as swimming, water polo, volleyball, soccer, track and field, fencing, crew, basketball, golf, cross country, tennis, softball, and baseball.
