USD's athletes compete in the West Coast Conference at the Division I level of the NCAA. The sports teams are nicknamed the Toreros. Some of the notable alumni of the university are Lowell McAdam, President and CEO of Verizon Wireless; Theo Epstein, General Manager of the Boston Red Sox; and Steve Poltz, musician.
