A freshman applicant is a student with fewer than 12 credit hours of credits work after high school graduation. The most important criteria in the admissions decision is the high school academic record: quality and level of difficulty of courses, grade point average, grade trends, consistency, and SAT or ACT test scores.

The submission of the "application essay" and "general information page" is required.

You can apply to FAMU by submitting the State University System, or the FAMU application form. The application can be obtained by contacting the FAMU Office of Undergraduate Admissions, or you may apply online. There is a non-refundable $20. 00 application fee. Be sure to mail in the signature page and residency affidavit along with the fee. We do not accept out-of-state fee waiver. FAMU operates on a rolling admissions basis. Students are generally notified of their admission decision within two to four weeks after receipt of all supporting documents.

Beginning freshman applying for admission must submit the following:

Applicants applying for admission must submit a SAT score of at least 1010 or an ACT score of at least 21. SAT or ACT scores are also required of international applicants.

All high school students must submit an official transcript from a regionally accredited high school with a grade point average of at least 2. 50 (4. 0 scale) computed by FAMU. If you completed the GED, submit scores and partial high school transcript, or if foreign, its equivalent.

All applicants must have earned a minimum of 19 high school academic units, defined as year-long courses which are not remedial in nature.

  • English - 4 units
  • Mathematics - 3 units (Algebra I or above)
  • Natural Science - 3 units (two of which must include substantial lab requirements)
  • Social Science - 3 units (history, civics, political science, economics sociology, psychology, and geography)
  • Foreign Language - 2 units (both credits must be in the same language)
  • Electives - 4 (must be from the above subject areas)
Additional weight is assigned to all honors, advanced, and IB courses. A student who has a satisfactory high school record, including at least a "B" average in the required high school academic units in grades 9 through 12, and who submits other appropriate evidence is academically eligible for admission.

If you have attended any institution(s) of higher education (including dual Enrolment), ask each institution to forward an official transcript of your academic record. Transcripts must be mailed to Florida A&M University.
