The University of Florida, institution of higher learning, in Gainesville, Florida. The institution traces its roots to 1853, when the East Florida Seminary, then in Ocala, began receiving state support; the seminary moved to Gainesville following the Civil War. Legislation enacted in 1905 that reorganized the state's higher-education system established the University of the State of Florida, in Gainesville, for men; the institution was renamed the University of Florida in 1909 and became coeducational after World War II. Today it includes colleges of agriculture, architecture, business administration, dentistry, education, engineering, fine arts, health and human performance, health-related professions, journalism and communications, law, liberal arts and sciences, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine; schools of accounting, and building construction, and forest resources, and conservation; and a graduate school. The degrees of bachelor, master, and doctor are awarded, as are professional degrees in dentistry, law, medicine, and veterinary medicine.
