Founded as the Crane Junior College in 1911, the college was rechristened the Malcolm X College in 1969. This renaming was in honor of the civil rights advocate and orator Malcolm X. The college offers associate's degrees in applied science, arts, science, and general studies. Apart from this, there are several distance learning, adult education and continuing education programs. Malcolm X College also has a special nursing program for students.

Malcolm X College has men's basketball and cross-country teams and a women's basketball team. The weightlifting team is open to both men and women. For the most part, these teams play at the junior college level.
