The University of Illinois at Springfield was established in 1969 as the Sangamon State University. On July 1, 1995, it became a part of the University of Illinois and adopted its current name. The university campus comprises of more than 15 buildings in Springfield, Illinois. UIS confers bachelors and masters degrees to around 5, 000 students every year and is organized into the following academic divisions:

  • College of Public Affairs and Administration
UIS competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' American Midwest Conference and in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. They are also members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II. The University of Illinois at Springfield's sports teams are known as the Prairie Stars.
