The University of Massachusetts Boston, also referred to as "Umass Boston", is a public, coeducational, research college located in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It was originally established as Boston State College in 1852 but was renamed UMass Boston in 1964. Every year the university grants admission to over 12, 000 students worldwide. The sports teams of the university are known as The Beacons. The official mascot of UMass Boston is The Beacon. The school sponsors men's teams for baseball, basketball, cross country, ice hockey, lacrosse, track and field, soccer, and tennis. For women, the university sponsors baseball, basketball, cross country, ice hockey, lacrosse, track and field, soccer, tennis, softball, and volleyball teams.
