It was founded in 1873 by leaders of the Free Methodist Church as the Spring Arbor Seminary. SAU fields more than 12 intercollegiate sports teams that compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).
