Maryville University of St. Louis , also referred to as Maryville, was established in the year 1872 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart as an academy for women. In 1923 it became a four-year college and in 1991 it gained university status. It is one of the oldest private universities in the St. Louis , Missouri area.
