It was established in 1966 when the New Jersey Department of Education approved its charter. GCC also operates the Business and Industry Training Center in the West Deptford Township. The college enrolls more than 6, 000 students every year.

GCC's athletic teams are nicknamed the Roadrunners. They have won more than 12 national championships at the National Junior College Athletic Association level in a variety of sports like basketball, tennis, basketball and soccer.
