Study at Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School
New York
Abraham
Joshua Heschel Day School is dedicated to providing an integrated
secular and Judaic program which develops competent, self-directed and
resourceful learners. We consider the whole child and seek to engender a
strong sense of self and a life-long commitment to learning and to
Judaism. Recognizing that each child is unique, instruction is designed
to accommodate the individual differences of learners.
We are selective in staffing our school. We seek inspiring and
nurturing educators who have a passion for learning. These highly
qualified professionals are as competent in understanding the
developmental stages of their students as they are in teaching content.
At Heschel, the curriculum is regularly reviewed by the
administration and faculty to incorporate current educational research
and technology. Valuing each member of the group, and appreciating the
special attributes of peers are intrinsic goals of our program.
Research indicates that the process of learning is as important as
the product. Therefore, we provide an individualized, experiential
program that emphasizes the development of thinking, problem solving and
creative self-expression which reaches far beyond the rote mastery of
basic skills.
One of the highest ideals of our school is educating children to
understand and respect the diversity that exists in observing the Jewish
religion in our community and in Israel. Students study the philosophy
and practices of the various traditions within Judaism. We cultivate an
understanding and respect for other peoples and their cultures while
embracing our own unique heritage.
We strive to create a highly motivational learning environment in
which each individual affirms the covenant made by our ancestors at
Sinai. We embrace the traditional love for Eretz Yisrael (Land of
Israel) as the birthplace of our history and religion. We strive to
strengthen the partnership between Israel and the Jews of the diaspora
by educating our children to understand that it is in this relationship
that the future vitality of Judaism resides. Only through living
Judaism, in the home, school, synagogue and community will we bind one
generation to the next, thereby transmitting our religious and cultural
traditions.
