Study English in New York

Baruch College City University of New York

Baruch College New York is a senior college of The City University of New York . An internationally recognized educational institution with a proven record of success, Baruch serves more than 15 000 undergraduate and graduate students. Among the College s many advantages are its prime location in the heart of New York, convenient to public transportation and cultural activities, and its award-winning state-of-the-art library and multimedia computer facilities. The English Language Program is housed in the Division of Continuing Studies, which serves 10 000 students each year in non-degree programs in business, finance, computers, paralegal studies, real estate, office skills and language.

The Teaching Method used in the English Language Program is the Rassias Method, which makes the learning process an engaging experience. Interactive, dramatic teaching techniques and rhythmic drills help students learn English better and more quickly than other approaches. The method emphasizes all language skills, include listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing with special emphasis on oral proficiency.

The English Language Program offered by Baruch s Division of Continuing Studies provides practical communication skills for academic and professional success. Classes are taught by dedicated professionals, and student receive more individual attention because class size is small, with an average of 15 students per section.

Three 10-week terms and one 7-week term are held each year. Students can attend on either a full-or-part-time basis; however, those students holding F-1 visas must attend full-time at least 3 consecutive terms of the 4 terms each year in order to maintain full-time status. The full-time program included three core classes that total 18 hours per week.

Placement tests are given three weeks before term to determine each new student s proficiency level. Students are placed in one of ten levels, which range from beginner to advanced. The testing includes an oral test in English, a written grammar test, and a composition. All new students must take the placement test before beginning classes.

Students enrolled in the program-nearly 75 000 each year- come from countries throughout the world: Latin America, Europe, Middle East, South Pacific and China, Japan, and Korea. Day students are primarily international students who wish to continue their studies in undergraduate or graduate programs in the United States, while many evening students are non-native English-speaking professionals who wish to improve their communication skills. Students are required to have earned a High School Diploma or equivalent degree.

Fees and other expenses. Our full-time tuition is $1,425 ($75 non-refundable application fee) for each ten-week term and $1,125 for a seven-week term; a $50 (non-refundable) testing fee for new students; an average of $35 to $65 per term books; and about $45 per term for the Friday Activities Program (optional), which includes museum visits, boat trips, and other cultural events. Part-time study is priced per class. A $50 penalty fee (non-refundable) will be charged for full-time registrations accepted after the registration deadline (part-time $10).

Services provided include orientation for new students, held prior to the beginning of each term; assistance in choosing appropriate classes; undergraduate and graduate admissions advisement; and help with other matters of importance to international students. Over 100 students clubs and organizations at the College are open to students in the English Language Program. Although students are responsible for making their own housing arrangements, some information about assistance in finding housing is available upon request.
