Campbell University was established on January 5, 1887, as Buies Creek Academy by James Archibald Campbell. It became Campbell Junior College in 1926 and a senior college in 1961. It gained university status on June 6, 1979, when it adopted its current name. The university covers around 850 acres in Buies Creek, North Carolina. Campbell University is divided into the following academic units:
