It was established by Dr. Simon Green Atkins in 1892. WSSU's campus stretches over more than 110 acres of urban land. The university enrolls more than 5, 000 students annually. WSSU's sports teams are known as the Rams. WSSU sponsors men's teams in basketball, cross country, football, track and field, golf and tennis. Its women take part in basketball, bowling, cross country, track and field, softball, tennis and volleyball. Winston Salem State University Selectivity
The admissions department at Winston Salem State University does not accept all those who apply. Most students' verbal SAT scores were in the range of 400 to 480 in 2007. A quarter of students admitted in 2007 scored 490 or higher on the math SAT.
