Vanderbilt University, or VU, is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational, research university in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. It was founded in 1873. The university is organized into four undergraduate and six graduate schools. Together, they enroll over 10, 000 students every year. U. S. News and World Report (2009 edition) ranked Vanderbilt 18th among national universities. The university is among the top 25 recipients of federal educational research funds.

Vanderbilt University's intercollegiate athletics teams are nicknamed the Commodores. The university is a charter member of the Southeastern Conference. Some of the notable alumni are Delbert Mann, Academy Award-winning director; Kelsie B. Harder, leading onomastician; and Greg Abbott, Attorney General of Texas.
