Study at Hampton University


Hampton University, also referred to as HU, is a private, coeducational HBCU (historically black colleges and universities) university. It is located in Hampton, Virginia, United States. It was established on April 1, 1868, to teach blacks and mulattos how to read and write. It was legally chartered in 1870 and called Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. In 1930, it was renamed to Hampton Institute. In 1984, it was raised to University status and renamed to Hampton University. Today, the University grants admission to more than 4, 500 students every year.

Prospective students are advised that admissions are not open to all; the school selects from among qualified applicants. The school attracts a lot of applicants every year, and can only accept about 49% of them . Three quarters of students in 2007 had SAT verbal scores of at least 465. Half of math SAT scores of accepted students fell between 472 and 578.

Faculty

The school maintains a faculty/student ratio (full-time) which is better than most colleges. Hampton has a tenure system for senior faculty.
