Norfolk State University is a four-year, state-supported, liberal arts university located in Norfolk, Virginia. It was established in 1935 as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University. It was renamed Norfolk State University in 1979. NSU is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and the Virginia High_tech Partnership. The university offers a wide variety of degrees and programs in diverse Course Topics. It is organized into the following academic units:

NSU's sports teams participate in the NCAA's Division I in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Its athletic teams are nicknamed the Spartans.
